Vietnam Relief Effort provided funds to build a new school in Phuoc Dong, one of the poorest hamlets in one of the poorest communes in central coastal Vietnam, that was completed in 2006. Phuoc Dong now has a new school that will relieve overcrowding and allow students to attend a full class day.
VRE also provided funds for ten scholarships for the poorest students in the school—those whose parents could not afford the school fees. Ninety-eight children attend the new school built by East Meets West.
The local community was responsible for building a fence around the school and planting new trees. The new school also has new furniture and clean, modern restrooms, fans and blackboards.
