Education is a priority in Vietnam because it is a crucial
building block in the country's reconstruction and revitalization.
However, thousands of children are deprived of an education
because there are not enough schools in Vietnam, especially
in rural areas where over 65 percent of the nation's population
lives.
The Vietnamese government simply does not have enough money
to meet the demand for the construction of new schools and the
renovation of dilapidated ones that are unsafe for use.
That is where East Meets West steps in. We strive to close
this educational gap by funding the construction and renovation
of kindergarten and elementary schools. A two-room school can
be built or renovated for as little as $6,300.
East Meets West has built and renovated more than 60 schools,
opening the door to lower education for thousands of children
who would have otherwise been shut out. Several more school
projects are on East Meets West's list waiting for funding.
Vietnam is moving from an agricultural society into an industrial
one. This transition is stressing the education system at all
levels, especially when it comes to primary schools. East Meets
West strives to create access to basic education for students
in rural and underserved areas so they might have a chance at
participating in the emerging economy.
