East Meets West has an unequaled track record in developing education facilities in poor, marginalized and ethnic minority areas of Vietnam. EMW has built facilities ranging from small two-room Early Childhood Care and Education Centers (ECCE) to the 12-story English Language Training Facility in Da Nang and the Thai Nguyen Medical University for ethnic minorities in northern Vietnam.
Education is a priority in Vietnam because it is a crucial building block in the country's rapidly developing economic and social infrastructure. Many children are deprived of an education because there are not enough schools in Vietnam, especially in the rural areas that are home to over 70 percent of the nation's population.
As Vietnam transitions from an agricultural society to an industrial one, increased demand is putting stress on the education system at all levels. The Vietnamese government simply does not have enough money to meet the demand for the construction of new schools and the replacement of dilapidated, unsafe structures.
This is where East Meets West steps in. East Meets West works to create access to basic education for students in rural and underserved areas to prepare them to participate in the emerging economy. We close the education gap by funding the construction and renovation of early childhood education centers, elementary schools and a number of large facilities that serve universities in Vietnam.
EMW's School Construction program consists of these components:
Early Childhood Care and Education Centers: Early childhood education is considered essential in preparing a child to be a lifetime learner inside and outside the classroom. EMW is building new ECCE centers that incorporate tactile and interactive learning to encourage sensory and intellectual development.
Primary Schools: EMW replaces old, rundown classrooms with new functional, ventilated, well-lit and spacious classrooms at primary schools to give impoverished and underprivileged students a chance to learn in a safe and healthy environment.
Kon Ray Ethnic Minority Boarding School: Funded by USAID, East Meets West built a large boarding school that serves ethnic minority students in Kon Tum Province in Vietnam's central highlands.Higher Education Infrastructure: Funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies, EMW has built a number of very large facilities over the last 10 years that serve Vietnam's higher education institutions.
