EMW was founded by Vietnamese-American author and philanthropist Le Ly Hayslip and received its first official contract in Vietnam on February 1, 1988. EMW’s first project was the Mother’s Love Clinic for homeless children in Da Nang, and today the organization has an outstanding portfolio of grassroots and large construction programs. EMW’s multi-million dollar construction efforts include the National Hospital for Pediatrics (ongoing), the Hue Cardiovascular Center, the Da Nang Multi-Function Hospital, and the University of Da Nang English Language Institute, among many others.
EMW’s grassroots programs include Operation Healthy Heart, which provides heart surgery funding for disadvantaged children; the Support Network for People with Disabilities, which provides surgeries and vocational training for people with disabilities in central and north Vietnam; ADAPT, an anti-sex-trafficking program in the Mekong Delta; SPELL scholarships for elementary school students; Breath of Life, which donates essential breathing equipment for premature babies in rural hospitals; Clean Water & Sanitation; orphanages in central Vietnam; the construction of kindergartens and elementary schools; and providing children in remote areas of Vietnam with free dental care. EMW’s Clean Water & Sanitation program was recently awarded a $3.3 million USD multi-year grant from the World Bank, the first of its kind to an NGO in Vietnam.
EMW has frequently been honored with awards from the Vietnamese Prime Minister, President, & Minister of Education for the development of Vietnam through humanitarian work, enhancement of friendly relations between Vietnam & the U.S., and development of Vietnamese education achievements. Through 2008, EMW will have invested an estimated total of $78 million USD in humanitarian and infrastructure projects to aid the development of Vietnam and its people.
“East Meets West would like to thank OPV for their generous support in sponsoring this event,” said Rad Kivette, EMW’s Director of Development in Vietnam. “We are here today not only to mark our 20-year anniversary but to also express our gratitude to our supporters. We are optimistic about Vietnam’s future, and committed to its sustainable development.”
