East Meets West Executive Director Receives Award from Vietnamese Government for contributions to Vietnam

HANOI—February 1, 2008

John Anner, Executive Director of the East Meets West Foundation (EMW), received the Medal of Peace and Friendship Among Nations from the Vietnam Union for Friendship Organization (VUFO), the government agency that manages international non-governmental and bilateral organizations and foundations in Vietnam.  The medal honors Mr. Anner’s leadership and invaluable contributions to Vietnam’s development over the last five years in the fields of education, public health, clean water and sanitation, and public infrastructure. The award ceremony took place at the offices of the People's Aid Coordinating Committee in Hanoi on February 1, 2008—the 20th anniversary of EMW’s founding and the 5th anniversary of Mr. Anner’s arrival to EMW in February 2003.

Prior to EMW, Mr. Anner was the founder and executive director of the Independent Press Association for seven years, a membership organization that provides technical assistance to hundreds of independent periodicals. Mr. Anner was also a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mauritania, West Africa in 1983-1985. He received a B.A. with Special Honors in Political Science from Tufts University in 1982, and an M.S. in International Agricultural Development from the University of California at Davis in 1989. He has received numerous awards and fellowships for academic excellence.

John currently lives in Hanoi with his wife and three children.
