Dear [member_name_first],

What a great time to give thanks!

In this edition of our e-newsletter, we'd like to share with you exciting news about our water program; ways to get involved with EMW through our Vietnam Compassion Gifts catalog; and, news of publications, events, and blogs we think you'll be interested in reading.

FamilyIn a huge step forward for one of EMW's top program priorities, our highly-reputable Clean Water and Sanitation program just received $3.3 million dollars from the Global Partnership on Output Based Aid (GPOBA), a program administered by the World Bank. This represents the first World Bank grant to an NGO in Vietnam. The GPOBA support will allow our program to:

  • Build an additional 75 water systems in villages in rural Vietnam over the next three years
  • Provide access to safe water for drinking, cooking, and washing to an additional 150,000 people

Most importantly, the program will provide a basic necessity that so many of us take for granted. Read more about the new GPOBA grant here.

compassion coverI'm also pleased to announce the publication of our second Vietnam Compassion Gifts catalog. When you make a donation to EMW through our catalog, EMW will send out a beautiful gift card to your recipient describing the gift you have made in his or her honor. These are gifts that benefit everyone: yourself, your gift recipient, and families and children in Vietnam. {If you'd like to order more catalogs to place in your business, church, community center, or to pass out to friends and family, send us an email with your address and we'll gladly mail you extra copies.}

need coverLast but certainly not least, an article about EMW's Breath of Life neonatal health program, and our partnership with KSE Medical, is featured on the latest cover of NEED magazine, a national publication that "creates exposure for humanitarian aid via an informative, artistic, visual narrative of human stories." We're thrilled to be featured in this award winning publication. Visit the NEED website or your local bookstore to get a copy of the issue.

As we approach the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, I speak on behalf of the entire board and staff at East Meets West when I extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who continue to support our work serving disadvantaged communities in Vietnam.

Warm wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving,

Best regards,

On My Way to Work: Riding Motorbikes in Vietnam

"...During rush hour, you can be cruising along a busy street trying to avoid colliding with the 25 other motorbikes sharing the lane with you and come upon any one of the following: A woman wrapped from head to toe, wearing plastic flip-flops, rolling an enormous hand-wheeled garbage cart; junior high-school boys in white shirts and little scarf-ties slowly riding four abreast; an old man in a pith helmet and cut-off shorts walking across the road in the middle of the street, one withered hand waving above his head in a vain attempt to attract attention...."

Southwest Airlines and EMW Celebrate Partnership in Ho Chi Minh City

EMW held a special recognition ceremony on Oct. 20 in Ho Chi Minh City for Southwest Airlines in recognition of their year-long support for EMW’s Operation Healthy Heart (OHH) program.

Southwest Airlines campaign, Giving LUV, Saving Lives, has enabled EMW to redirect resources otherwise used for domestic airfare expenditures, in addition to helping with EMW’s efforts to fund at least 10 children’s heart surgeries in Vietnam.

Read more about the event here.
