the monthly e-newsletter of the foundation

ISSUE O5 | january 2007

Dear EMW supporters and friends,

Happy New Year! Thanks to the incredible generosity of supporters like you, East Meets West just wrapped up a highly successful end-of-year giving season. Individual donations totaled over $163,000 in the month of December while new commitments from organizational partners like American International Group, the Boeing Company, The Ford Foundation and Southwest Airlines totaled almost $1.1 million.

We sincerely thank all of you who gave to EMW through your online donations, special appeal support and using our new Compassion Gifts catalog. Your support continues to make our work possible.

Because of your generosity, EMW will be able to work on new programs in 2007 and expand on several existing ones, including:

  • Building our new Support Network for People with Disabilities Program (SN-PWD) in Quang Ngai province, thanks to a large grant from the Ford Foundation. The EMW program will renovate medical facilities to serve people with disabilities and create channels by which this population can access medical and educational services.
  • Designing and building a new ecological garden in Hue in partnership with the New Moon Foundation. Located in a famous picturesque area, the New Moon Ecological Garden will offer both organic gardening and a serene, peaceful landscape designed to encourage peaceful reflection.
  • Expanding the EMW Dental Program. With the goal to provide more than 40,000 modern dental services a year by 2008, the EMW Dental Team will continue to reach thousands of poor children who would otherwise never receive dental care.
  • Breaking ground on EMW's new boarding school in Kon Tum province funded by USAID. The school, to be built in a region comprised mostly of ethnic minorites, will house 250 students, vocational training workshops, a library and computer lab, an animal husbandry area and organic vegetable gardens.
  • Continuing to expand our Operation Healthy Heart program throughout Vietnam, made possible through new partnerships with American International Group and Southwest Air (see below).

We'll continue to keep you posted through our e-news and our magazine, Reach Vietnam, of all our program work, staff and event news.

Thank you again for your continued support
and best regards for a peaceful and prosperous 2007,

John Anner
Executive Director

P.S. Our upcoming Annual Report, mailed to all EMW donors, will take a comprehensive look back at EMW's year in 2006 so be sure to get on our mailing list to receive a copy, if you are not already.

American International Group Announces $300,000 donation to Operation Healthy Heart

Many critically-ill children in Vietnam will soon receive the life-saving heart surgery they have been waiting for thanks to a generous commitment made by American International Group (AIG), one of the largest insurance organizations in the world. Martin Sullivan, President and CEO of AIG, announced during the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in November that the company would donate $300,000 to help support EMW’s Operation Healthy Heart (OHH) program over the next three years. The $300,000 committment will allow EMW to expand the OHH program into southern Vietnam.
