ISSUE O4 | december 2006

Dear [member_name_first],

Welcome to the holiday edition of East Meets West's E-News!

As we approach the end of the year and the holiday season, many of us are thinking of how to buy gifts for family and friends while helping those less fortunate by supporting our favorite charitable organizations.

This edition of our newsletter offers you innovative ways to support our life changing programs in Vietnam. Check out our new Vietnam Compassion Gifts catalog as well as our tips on different methods of giving that will ease the burden on your cash flow and your tax liability during this time of holiday shopping.

East Meets West's direct service programs and charitable vehicles demonstrate the truth of the proven adage: "It's better to give than to receive."

Warm regards and

Happy Holidays,

John Anner
Executive Director

Special Ways to Give to EMW

New Pension Protection Act Helps Those 70 1⁄2 years
and older give more Charitable Gifts Tax-Free!

The Pension Protection Act of 2006, which was signed into law on August 17, provides an additional method for income and estate tax savings through the use of charitable gifts. The applicable provisions, in summary, provide that a person age 70 ½ or older may make a charitable gift directly from his or her IRA of up to $100,000 per year (in years 2006 and 2007) without having to report the distribution as taxable income.

Aside from your home, an individual retirement account (IRA) may be the largest asset you hold--experts say more than $18 trillion of accumulated wealth is currently held in IRAs. Please consult your tax advisor to learn if the Pension Protection Act could help you to more easily give to East Meets West's life-changing programs.
